The primary function of insulators is to provide electrical insulation and mechanical fixation, for which various electrical and mechanical performance requirements are specified.

 

For example, they must not break down or flashover along the surface under specified operating voltage, lightning overvoltage, and internal overvoltage; they must not suffer damage or failure under specified long-term and short-term mechanical loads; they must not exhibit significant deterioration after long-term operation under specified mechanical and electrical loads and various environmental conditions; and the insulator fittings must not exhibit significant corona discharge under operating voltage to avoid interfering with radio or television reception. Because insulators are widely used devices, their connecting fittings must also be interchangeable. Furthermore, the technical standards for insulators require various electrical, mechanical, physical, and environmental condition tests, depending on the model and operating conditions, to verify their performance and quality.
