A surge protection device (SPD) is an indispensable component for lightning protection of electronic equipment. Formerly known as a "lightning arrester" or "overvoltage protector," its English abbreviation is SPD. The function of a surge protector is to limit transient overvoltages entering power lines or signal transmission lines to within the voltage range that the equipment or system can withstand, or to divert powerful lightning currents to the ground, protecting the protected equipment or system from damage caused by the surge.
The types and structures of surge protectors vary depending on their application, but they should at least include a non-linear voltage limiting element. Basic components used in surge protectors include: discharge gaps, gas-filled discharge tubes, varistors, suppression diodes, and choke coils.
