Product structure and pollution resistance are key:

Glass insulators employ a cylindrical head structure, ensuring uniform stress distribution on the load-bearing components. Compared to the conical head structure of traditional porcelain insulators, which has been used for decades in China, glass insulators are smaller, lighter, stronger, and have superior electrical performance. Because glass has a much larger coefficient of linear expansion than porcelain, its dimensions are much smaller than composite insulation materials, and it is easily connected to metal fittings and cement, resulting in good material matching for the load-bearing components. Under various climatic conditions, it is not prone to dangerous stress and aging like porcelain and composite insulators. Furthermore, it is difficult to solve the structural quality issues at the composite interface in composite insulators.

However, composite insulators have excellent pollution resistance and typically require no cleaning. This significantly reduces line maintenance costs. Therefore, composite insulators have broad development prospects. While glass has a higher dielectric constant, resulting in a lower dry flashover voltage for a single glass insulator compared to a porcelain insulator, its larger main capacitance improves the surface voltage distribution, making it comparable to the flashover voltage of a porcelain insulator string.
