Working principle
During normal operation, the arrester bears the system's continuous operating voltage (about 14.4kV). the zinc oxide varistor is in a high-resistance state, low power consumption. When the system is subjected to lightning surges or switching surges, the varistor responds in milliseconds, the resistance value drops sharply, and thousands or more amperes of surge current are quickly discharged, while the overvoltage amplitude is clamped below the insulation tolerance value of the protected equipment (nominal residual voltage ≤50kV). After the overvoltage disappears, the varistor automatically returns to the high-resistance state without power frequency follow current, and can immediately respond to the next overvoltage impact.
